Director of Liturgy & Music

I am happy to serve our parishioners, especially ISU students, as the parish liturgist. My responsibilities include music, hospitality, service at liturgy, the visual arts, oral proclamation, behind-the-scenes worship roles, as well as being the staff liaison for the student liturgy team and various spiritual growth and prayer groups.

It seems that the public face of liturgy, musicians, Communion ministers, lectors, and such get all the attention. This may be true, but many hands also work out of sight to ensure our worship of God is fruitful and faith-filled. If you are considering getting involved in parish liturgy, come talk to me about it. I will invite you to discern your gifts and the parish needs and steer you into a role that will suit God's special gifts to you. You may have original ideas, and these too are welcome. Very welcome.

My own faith journey began as an unbaptized child in a Protestant home, peeking at my mother's Bibles, and arranging her set of Scripture quotes on note cards. After attending 6th grade in a Catholic school, I was baptized at age eleven. After earning an undergraduate degree in General Science, I was eventually led to discern other life directions. I returned to grad school to study systematic theology, and after a 1988 graduation, it has been an honor and privilege to serve in full-time ministry in Catholic parishes large and small. I married Anita in 1996, and we adopted our daughter in 2001.

My hobbies include writing, especially on my blog Catholic Sensibility, and for a few church publications. Astronomy has been a keen interest since I was a boy. I also like to read, cook, play games, watch ice hockey, and compose music.
